Pizza Meine Liebe (231 High St, Northcote Ph: 9482 7001) is a giant pizza oven with an overload of flavours, spices and above all scrumptious pizza. However, due the pizzeria explosion that has occurred all over the city, this small pizzeria is not easy to get into and bookings are highly recommended.
With its kitsch furnishings and bohemian Northcote setting, the ambiance at Pizza Meine Liebe not only adds to the anticipation of biting into a pizza straight from the overworked oven but also adds to the charm of this inner city suburb.
The toppings are a kaleidoscope of tastes and flavours from speck to asparagus to Gorgonzola and beyond, the team at this pizzeria know how to push the envelope with pizza toppings but maintain a sense of class and dignity without stooping to the ridiculous (Hawaiian pizza… err, no thanks). And their names are equally as creative.
The Streisand was delicious and exactly what I was looking for. It’s thin crust topped with potato, gorgonzola, caramelised onion and asparagus was purely gastronomic heaven. In fact, I would go so far as to say it was the best pizza I have had in Australia. The flavours combined to create a melt-in-your-mouth even the crust avoided the blandness that so many pizza crusts can have.
My friend’s pizza came with prosciutto, speck, mozzarella and chilli and was equally as tasty combining the saltiness of the cured ham with the bitterness of the speck and the sweet heat of the chilli.
Washed down with Italian soda water and wrapped up with some icy cold lemon, raspberry and melon gelato added the perfect touch to a delicious meal on a hot balmy night during summer.
